convocation!
yesterday I bought all my books. 9 books for one class, can you believe it? I'm so excited! You see, the books are Homer's Iliad, Vergil's Aeneid, Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, and then books of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides.....damn. I considered starting to read one of them before classes started, but I decided that would be crossing the line.
I switched from French to Italian at the last minute - my advisor is Italian and she sort of swayed me, and I also realized that I could understand Spanish pretty well, read original Dante, and go to a year abroad in Florence which would be a lot better for Classical Studies than Paris or Geneva (the French programs)
Convocation is tonight. From what I've been told, convocation is just an excuse for the entire school to get drunk, dress in as little clothing as possible and scream a lot. My house's theme is Country/Western. I've gotta go find a plaid flannel shirt. Because I like wearing clothes. At least in public.
The whole deal sounds kinda silly and gratuitous, but I'm all about keeping one foot in every door right now. Last night I hung out with a bunch of loud, preppy girls and watched Romeo + Juliet while they raved that it was the best movie ever (bad camera work, worse acting, pretty cool interpretation of the play but could they at least TRY to show the relevance to modern life rather than hamming the fuck out of it? Oh, and what's up with Mercutio being a drag queen?). It's cool that the average IQ in this school is a lot higher than many places - I live in the preppiest corner of campus and even the girls here know how to speak, articulate their opinions and at least know when they're saying dumb things. However, just because they're all smarter than average doesn't mean they're all actually intelligent. I've gotta get myself over to the other side of campus more often.
This is weird, and awesome, and fun, and tiring. The last couple of meals I've gone and sat by myself just so I didn't have to talk to anyone. I'm really not used to constantly having new people around me - I'm either going to be desperate for quiet when I get home, or turned into some sort of social junkie.
